Going to school or college, for most people, may be viewed as a hassle and sometimes, a very stressful period.
However, when you look back someday, you will most likely realize that these were some of the greatest moments in your life.
Here are the top things that I miss the most about being a student.
Structure = Less Effort
The great thing about school is that there is a lot of structure. Yes, believe it or not structure is a good thing. You know where you have to be at every time of the day and what is expected of you. Sure, this may be a hassle and you may feel restricted at times, but this can also work the opposite way, as well. Having a plan for each day lets you fall into a routine without much thought or effort. Way easier than waking up to squabbling kids and no sugary cereal to feed them – unless there’s people passed out in your dorm room and you ran out of CocoPuffs – then good luck!
Meeting New People = Friendship Possibilities
When you are a student and a part of a large school or university, there is always the potential of meeting new people. When you have hundreds of people around you to make friends with and yes, perhaps, even date. Take advantage of the opportunity to meet new people while you are in school or on a university campus. They make it easy with social gatherings like dances and sporting events, so get involved and find a new friend or even the love of your life.
Brain Exercise = Power
Even though you may not feel like your brain is being exercised each day (and I’m not talking about how many coffees it takes to keep you awake in class or if you have enough change to buy some more Froot Loops) new ideas and concepts are constantly being taught, which forces your brain into some mental training. Building your brain muscles now, will help you once out in the working world (where people tend to fall into boring routines that rob them of any kind of mental stimulation and just end up eating Bran Flakes to get their other end stimulated). Big brains filled with new and interesting ideas is cool and sure beats the lazy and bored brains of some older adults.
Following Your Dreams = Happiness
Do you have a dream? Then chasing it down while in school is a huge advantage that many people look back on and wish they had the opportunity to do over. School is a training ground that can lead you to “impossible” heights. So go for your dreams and grab the schooling and skills it takes to land that awesome job in the future.
Homework and Grades = Recognition
As crazy as this sounds, homework and being graded on your work can be missed. Teachers and professors are paid professionals that take the time to read YOUR thoughts and insights – this isn’t always the way after school. Take advantage of the people in your life that pay attention to your efforts and either offer a word of encouragement or full-out praise for a job well-done.
Freedom = Fun
Even though you may feel like you’re shackled by the educational-police, there is actually a lot of freedom in being a student. Think of it this way, you know what is expected of you on a daily basis, your weekends are basically free to do as you wish, you have the summers off and other than homework, you don’t really need to work “overtime.” Plus, you can live on junkie cereals.
Being a student is a wonderful time in a person’s life. Don’t take these years for granted. Enjoy them for what they are and move forward learning to do what will make you happy over a lifetime. Once this part of your life is over, you want to be able to look back on it fondly, not with regret and a longing to make it right, especially if you tend to be the kid that wakes up in someone’s dorm room, without any sugary cereal left.
